Permanent Hair Reduction works because targeted energies are absorbed by the pigment in hair and converted to heat. The light energy is transformed to heat energy and the hair follicle is heated to a critical temperature at which point it is cauterised. The laser disrupts hairs that are principally in the active growth (anagen) phase at the time of treatment. The laser is pulsed, or switched on, for a fraction of a second. The length of each pulse is just long enough for the hair follicle to be disrupted. The lasers each have a specially designed cooling system to help protect the skin.

Patient selection is a key aspect of laser treatment. Hair colour and skin type are the two most important factors. Temporary hair loss almost always occurs but for long term hair loss, the colour of hair is a significant factor. Black or brown hair indicates a high concentration of melanin in the follicle and is ideal for laser treatment. Blonde and red hair is treated less successfully and white and grey hair is unaffected.

Small areas, like the underarm or upper lip, can be treated in less than 10 minutes and larger areas, like the back or legs, can usually be treated in under half an hour. Unlike waxing, there is little discomfort and no need to let hair grow out between treatments. The appearance of the treated area immediately after a session does vary from one person to another. The after effects are usually minor and may include some redness. Most people are able to return immediately to normal activity.

What areas can be treated?

All areas of the body except the inner ear, and areas in close proximity to the eyes can be treated safely. Common areas for hair removal treatments include the upper lip and chin, full legs, bikini, underarms, back and chest.

Am I the right candidate?

The treatment is most effective for individuals who have fair skin and dark hair. Darker skin types can also be treated, however more treatments may be required.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable, not unlike "the flick of an elastic band" which is a common description used. For those who find the procedure uncomfortable, a topical anaesthetic is available.

Are there any side effects?

It is normal to experience some redness of the skin and some mild swelling which typically lasts from an hour to 24 hours. In rare instances the redness may last a few days and there could be some grazing or "scabbing" which typically subsides over a short period of time. Most people are able to return to normal activity immediately.

What should I expect after treatment?

After treatment you may experience slight irritation, much like mild sunburn. This usually lasts from 2-24 hours and can be soothed with Topical Gel. At any given time, some of your hair is not in an active growth phase so more than one treatment will be required to permanently prevent the growth of unwanted hair in the area.

Hair growth is reduced with each treatment. It may take a couple of treatments for you to see the difference as hair may continue to appear for up to 30 days as treated hair is expelled from your skin.
